From Concept to Production

1 The deeply inset grille and the sharp crease from the lower lamps were terrible for aerodynamics, and the recessed lamps were neither adequate for illumination nor legal.

2 Multiple hard surface-change lines on the front of the concept tended to confuse and retard oncoming air molecules. Smoothing the front end helps aerodynamically and simplifies production.

3 Saab 99-like, the tank-slit wraparound windshield was deemed likely to compete with plans for future Saab products. But GM may sell Saab anyway.

4 The sharp break from windshield to roof was likewise considered too Saab-like, and it was also aerodynamically undesirable, thus the change to uninterrupted flowing glass.

5 Big bulges for oversize - 21-inch - wheels were another drag-increasing styling element that had to go for the production car.

6 The grille shape was retained, but air flows into the engine compartment only through peripheral slots around the grille shield, which retains its diamond texture. Most air enters below the bumper.

7 Headlamps had to be bigger for adequate lighting, and wrapping them around the front end let side markers be incorporated.

8 The impossible-to-clean transparent fairings from the show car have been replaced by painted sheetmetal, which visually extends the height of the side glass.

9 These 17-inch wheels look much like the show car's 21-inch units, but in fact, they have been refined to reduce aerodynamic drag. Small details count when there's not much power available.

10 The continuous sweep of glass from windshield to roof is excellent for aerodynamic drag reduction, but it also gives the car a softer, safer appearance, desirable for a family car.

First Look: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ironically, it's only years after the big divorce that the Jeep brand finally benefits from the DaimlerChrysler marriage. An all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee debuts for 2011, and it now shares its underpinnings with the Mercedes-Benz M-class SUV. Better late than never, we suppose.

A new 3.6-liter replaces the previous 3.7-liter as the base V-6. It produces 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque (up significantly from the old lump's 210 and 235) and returns 11 percent better fuel economy, thanks in part to variable valve timing. The optional 360-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 returns to the playground, and both engines are paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive.

An optional Quadra-Lift air suspension (inherited from Mercedes) can raise the Grand Cherokee's ride height, increasing approach, departure, and breakover angles for even more off-road credibility. No longer constrained by the Commander, Jeep's mainstay family hauler has room to grow--and so the new Grand Cherokee is 1.8 inches longer, 3 inches wider, and, most important, rides on a wheelbase that's 5.3 inches longer. That last measurement contributes to a significant increase in rear-seat room, a welcome improvement over today's cramped bench. Jeep promises more soft-touch plastics and a higher quality interior, as well as an available Alpine sound system.

STAYIN' ALIVE, AT LEAST IN SOME FORM: The Grand Cherokee's styling is purely evolutionary, but Chrysler knows not to mess with a good thing--as the company faces extinction, it's Jeep that's most likely to survive.

Details are emerging concerning the upcoming Audi A7, a four-door “coupe” that will be a direct rival to Mercedes-Benz’s popular CLS and BMW’s upcoming entry, the Gran Turismo. The A7 could appear as soon as next year, as a 2010 model, built on the architecture of the Audi A5 (which also will be the basis of the next A6).

2010 Mercury Milan and 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid has been unveiled by Ford. With the 2.5-liter I-4 engines, 2010 Mercury Milan may develops 175 hp. While with an upgraded 3.0-liter V6 engine, 2010 Mercury Milan may outputs 19 hp more.

The 2010 Mercury Milan also comes some similar equipment as Ford Fusion Sport. The featured equipment includes SYNC, SIRIUS with Travel Link and Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert. Unfortunately, we don’t have any information yet about the 2010 Mercury Milan prices.

Meanwhile, another version - the new 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid may delivers 155 hp and 136 lb.-ft. of torque as it is powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that coupled with an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission or e-CVT.

Both Mercury Milan models also will be available in showrooms in spring 2009 (same time as 2010 Ford Fusion Sport).

The front-end will likely feature a more upright kidney grille in order to comply with stronger pedestrian protection laws, while the headlights won’t be stretched out like on the current model. BMW’s characteristic interaction between convex and concave shapes will still be emphasized, and will be clearly indicated in the engine hood’s lines.

The rear roofline and C-pillar connects more fluidly to the trunk lid, which is now devoid of the Bangle-butt that was so universally derided with the E60 model. Parts of the tail-lights continue onto the trunk lid in order to strengthen the impression of width. These are great news and as I get used to say when it’s the case, few people talked about this aspect and they didn’t include it in titles so I did this for you hopefully that more people will talk about it so more BMW fans will find out this news.

It was pretty expected this but I thought few time about it and probably I didn’t mention this on BMWcoop blog. The new 2011 BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid 5 will come with two variants of hybrids. The first one will include the hybrid system from BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and the second one will include hybrid system from BMW ActiveHybrid X6.

You can consider this the third ActiveHybrid or better said, you can call it BMW ActiveHybrid 5 and the car will be launched next year, probably just like the 2010 BMW 5 Series, at the end of the year so there is some time to wait for it.......Full

Worldcarfans said that the new BMW 1-Series was spotted in Germany and will be produced in 2011. Also, the friends from worldcarfans said that Peugeot SA and BMW manufacturers will build a large range between 1.4 to 3.0 liters for the new BMW 1-Series. I like a lot the M versions but for 1-Series will be only turbo engines.

Citroën is unleashing a hot new DS3 at the Geneva Motor Show - the limited edition 200hp DS3 Racing. DS3 Racing is a special edition with a 100% sporting pedigree. Planned for the second half of 2010, the exclusive DS3 Racing will be limited to just 1000 production units.

With integrated carbon-trimmed components and specialist motorsports equipment, DS3 Racing’s tuned and turbo-charged 1.6-litre THP 150 engine develops 200hp - a power increase of almost 30% over the standard unit - with a torque increase of 15% from 240Nm to 275Nm. To achieve the additional power output, from 156hp to 200hp, Citroën Racing’s engineers modified and optimised the powertrain components, tuned the performance of the turbo and adjusted the mapping of the engine control unit. A special tail pipe and muffler were also added.

Kia Motors unveiled its first-ever production hybrid model, the new Kia Forte LPI Hybrid. The car will make its world debut at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show and scheduling to go on sale in Korea this August. The new Forte sedan can run on both Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)– a common fuel in Korea - and electricity.

The new LPI Hybrid is equipped with a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder Gamma LPI HEV engine producing a crop of 114-horsepower and an utmost torque cost of 15.1 kg/m. The Korean automaker claims that when shared to a CVT transmission, the Forte LPI Hybrid has a fuel efficiency of 17.2km per litre of LPG. To better understand what this means, when converted to a flag gasoline engine that build would be 21.5km/liter that translates to 50.6mpg US, 60.7mpg UK or 4.7lt /100 km.

Brabham’s Gordon Murray designs an ultra flat, streamlined chassis. To make for better traction, the radiators are mounted almost alongside the cockpit while a delta shaped front wing is supposed to provide the front wheels with additional downforce.

The heart of the car is the BMW turbo engine. In the European Grand Prix, it is equipped with new turbos, longer suction pipes, modified camshafts and new pistons. At a charging pressure of 3.2bar, the unit delivers 700bhp.

Nelson Piquet wins the season opener, his home race, at Rio de Janeiro. The BT52 is consistently enhanced. For the French Grand Prix, the cars of Piquet and his team-mate, Riccardo Patrese, are equipped with carbon brake discs and six-speed gearboxes. The Brazilian makes perfect use of these new components by finishing runner-up.

Renault’s Alain Prost and the Ferrari drivers, René Arnoux and Patrick Tambay, turn out to be extremely competitive rivals, thus making for a thrilling season. But at the end of the day, Piquet prevails. Thanks to his consistently good results throughout the season and further wins at Monza and Brands Hatch, he secures the title in the final round, held at Kyalami, South Africa.

It's official -- lovers of big, honkin' gas-guzzlin' all-American Detroit SUVs, get out of your foreign communist cars. Hummer belongs to the Chinese.

The Wall Street Journal reports, "General Motors Co. said it has completed an agreement to sell its Hummer brand to China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co., four months after the companies reached a preliminary deal." The deal "needed the blessing of China's government," and formal approval from Beijing may not come until next year, but Chinese officials have consented to allow Tengzhong to sign the paperwork completing the deal today -- a strong signal that the company built on an image borrowed from the U.S. Army will, in fact, be in the hands of an obscure Chinese construction equipment manufacturer soon.

Rental Car Companies Cutting Chrysler Products

Chrysler's new owners have their work cut out for them. Even the rental car companies, which traditionally buy cheaper cars in high volume to keep their costs low, are buying fewer Chrysler models today.

Reuters reports, "Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc (DTG.N) said on Monday it would slash its 2010 car rental purchases from Chrysler." The company operates Dollar Rent a Car and Thrifty Auto Rental.

Autoblog notes, "Previously, the company was contractually bound to ensure that 75% of its fleet was composed of Chrysler vehicles." That contract, however, was modified as part of Chrysler's bankruptcy proceeding earlier this year. With its new freedom to explore products from other automakers, the company plans to buy just 30 percent of its cars from Chrysler this year, with the largest share of its new fleet, 34 percent, going to Ford.

It's been more than a year since gas prices soared above the $4 per gallon mark and fell back to earth, but Americans are still trading their way out of their large cars. A pair of new studies show that this trend has taken hold particularly among those who drive luxury cars.

Autoblog reports, "According to a new study...fewer premium buyers are moving up and more buyers are actually moving down." As recently as 2006, according to a study compiled by the Power Information Network, nearly 16% of new car buyers moved up, trading in a compact car to buy a midsize. "But through the first half of this year, only about 11% did so. And compared to 2006, this year two other categories showed 4% gains: people moving from large to mid-sized cars, and those moving from mid-sized to compact cars."
